Kind of depressing but it reminds us that in a less democratic setting it could be worse...

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/5/30/15631710/trump-bullshit4A.HEALTHY.BMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15427227885064051978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307187040250193857.post-45931842632021436632017-05-30T16:59:56.173-07:002017-05-30T16:59:56.173-07:00http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/05/in-trump-co...http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/05/in-trump-country-true-believers-are-still-holding-their-breath4A.HEALTHY.BMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15427227885064051978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307187040250193857.post-7972726392309684242017-05-27T05:26:34.616-07:002017-05-27T05:26:34.616-07:00I have read many explanations citing disenfranchis...I have read many explanations citing disenfranchised people in places where they are earning ever smaller wages, slipping further and further into debt, seeing their standard of living continually eroding.

But that doesn't explain the college-educated upper middle class people who voted for Trump.

Gerrymandering was probably partly responsible but honestly I stopped understanding Republicans in the 90s when it became clear to me that they were more about consolidating power than anything else. They used to be about fiscal responsibility. Then Bush II started spending like crazy and creating new Executive Branch departments. They used to be about traditional Protestant values. Then they elected an admitted sexual assaulter and serial philanderer.

Now they appear to be solidly about being the Rich People's Party, and I don't understand how that appeals to anyone except rich people, who are an increasingly small fraction of our population as the middle class continues to erode.

So despite my efforts to understand what happened last November and what continues to happen in Red America elections, it seems the votes are as much AGAINST women and people of color and of socialist leanings as anything else.

This country seems broken and it increasingly appears we would require a cataclysmic event to come back together.4A.HEALTHY.BMIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15427227885064051978noreply@blogger.com
