Pierre Bourd...I didn't know ANY of those words!<br />Pierre Bourdieu is a French sociologist who, among other things, researched the gendered use of language (in his case, middle-class French). Fascinating stuff - one of his findings was more or less that women used a "higher-class" register than men, including differences in pronunciation, tying language use to a social role of "civilizing" the family. eephttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12513054079408860420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307187040250193857.post-11497309579132075592014-06-24T07:01:07.721-07:002014-06-24T07:01:07.721-07:00Your take on the minuscule arachnid is clever, jus...Your take on the minuscule arachnid is clever, just need to tweak that last line.Annhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00827076515329274214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307187040250193857.post-55207699784943604912014-06-24T05:43:46.825-07:002014-06-24T05:43:46.825-07:00Codec is a computer geek term, and derives from &q...Codec is a computer geek term, and derives from "coder-decoder" or "compression-decompression" depending on who you ask. I subscribe to the former. So the definition they give is not a particularly good one. A codec is not, generally, a device. It's usually an algorithm or set of algorithms for encoding and decoding data streams. You've probably heard of things like "mp3", which is a codec.Chris Manlyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02080192988544831257noreply@blogger.com
